Our Commitment to Sustainability

Operating on K’gari is a privilege—and a responsibility we take seriously.

As a commercial 4×4 business, we rely on the island’s beaches, forests, lakes and unique ecosystems every day. K’gari is one of the world’s most remarkable natural environments, and protecting it is essential to ensuring it remains healthy, wild and accessible for generations to come.

For us, sustainability isn’t simply about reducing our environmental footprint. It’s about respecting Country, operating responsibly, minimising our impact and continually looking for better ways to do business in this extraordinary place.

From how we operate and maintain our vehicles, to how we manage waste, conserve resources and educate our customers, we are committed to making responsible choices. We believe commercial activity and environmental stewardship can work hand in hand—and that every journey on K’gari should leave as little impact as possible.

Our role in sustainability explained

Vehicle & transport

• We keep our vehicles meticulously maintained to maximise fuel efficiency and extend vehicle life.
• Choose fuel-efficient 4WDs when replacing the fleet.
• Reduce unnecessary idling.
• Plan routes and logistics to minimise unnecessary kilometres.
• We use correct tyre pressures to reduce fuel consumption and beach impact.
• Choose tyres suited to K’gari’s conditions and minimise premature replacement.
• Recycle or responsibly dispose of used tyres, oils, batteries and vehicle parts.
• Investigate lower-carbon fuels where operationally practical.
• Keep accurate records of fleet fuel use and emissions and set reduction targets.

Protecting K’gari

• Stay strictly on designated tracks and approved driving areas.
• Follow all vehicle-access and beach-driving requirements.
• Educate staff and customers about Leave No Trace principles.
• Never disturb wildlife, vegetation, freshwater lakes or other sensitive areas.
• Implement procedures for wildlife encounters and slow down in areas where animals are present.
• Carry rubbish and waste off the island.
• Provide rubbish bags to customers and encourage them to take all waste with them.
• Participate in regular beach or track clean-up programs.
• Report environmental damage, illegal dumping, erosion or other issues to the relevant authorities.

Waste & resource reduction

• Eliminate single-use plastics wherever possible and recycle waste from the guests lunch.
• Use reusable water bottles, cups and equipment.
• Install clearly labelled recycling and waste stations at your depot.
• Reduce paper through digital bookings, forms and customer information.
• Reuse or repair equipment rather than replacing it.
• Purchase products with recycled content or minimal packaging.
• Work with suppliers who have credible environmental practices.

Customers & education

• Give every customer a short K’gari environmental and Dingo briefing.
• Explain why tyre pressures, speed and staying on designated tracks matter.
• Teach customers how to behave around wildlife.
• Encourage customers to carry reusable water bottles and rubbish bags.
• Explain the importance of protecting freshwater lakes and vegetation.
• Include sustainability information in booking confirmations and pre-trip information.
• We actively encourage customers to leave the island cleaner than when they found it.
• Share conservation stories and local environmental projects on your website and social media.

Community & Country

• Build relationships with Butchulla Traditional Owners and respect Butchulla knowledge, culture and connection to Country.
• Where appropriate, seek opportunities to incorporate local knowledge into customer education.
• Use local suppliers and contractors where practical.
• Support local conservation and community organisations.
• Contribute financially or through staff time to environmental projects on K’gari.
• Work collaboratively with other island operators rather than treating sustainability as a competitive issue.

What you can do to help

1.  Pack It In. Pack It Out

Whatever you bring onto the island, take it back with you. No rubbish left behind.

2. Give Wildlife Room

K’gari is their home, we’re just visitors. Slow down, keep your distance and never feed wildlife.

3. Treat Water Like Gold

Freshwater is precious in Australia. Please bring a reusable bottle and use water wisely.

4. Ditch the Disposable

Choose reusable bottles, cups and containers wherever possible. Less waste means less impact.

5. Leave the Beach Wild

Enjoy it, photograph it and explore it — but leave the shells, sand, plants and natural treasures where you found them.

6. Look, Don’t Disturb

From freshwater lakes to towering forests and fragile dunes, tread lightly and respect the natural environment.

7. Choose Products Wisely

Where possible, bring environmentally friendly sunscreen, to help protect K’gari’s waterways and ecosystems.

8. Pack Smart

Think about what you really need before heading over. Less packaging means less waste, less weight and a lighter footprint.

9. Respect Country

You’re travelling through Butchulla Country. Take the time to learn about the land, its people and its stories — and help us care for Country.

10. Leave It Better

See a piece of rubbish you can safely pick up? Grab it. Every little bit helps keep K’gari wild.
