K’gari 4×4 Adventure Tours accessibility information

At K’gari 4×4 Adventure Tours, we aim to make our tours as inclusive and accessible to as many people as we can. K’gari is a remote natural environment with unique terrain and conditions and we want all guests to have clear information so they can decide whether our tours are suitable for their needs.

Our tours travel across sandy beaches, rainforest tracks, and uneven 4WD terrain, including locations such as Eli Creek, SS Maheno, rainforest tracks, and Lake McKenzie. Conditions can include soft sand, slopes, tree roots, water crossings, vehicle vibration, and uneven walking surfaces.

The tour is not recommended for infants who require child restraint seating. The tour buses are not fitted with such anchor points to accommodate child restraints.

Mobility Accessibility

Wheelchair Access

Due to the nature of K’gari’s terrain and our super high-clearance 4WD buses, our current tours are unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.

Our vehicles are not equipped with:

• Wheelchair lifts
• Ramps
• Dedicated wheelchair restraint systems
• We understand this may be disappointing and encourage guests to contact us directly, as we are always looking at ways to improve accessibility and may be able to recommend alternative experiences in the region.

Guests with Limited Mobility

Guests using crutches or managing injuries or mobility conditions may still be able to participate comfortably.

However, guests should be aware that tours may involve:

• Walking on soft sand
• Uneven beach terrain
• Boarding high-clearance 4WD vehicles
• Rainforest walks
• Long periods on unsealed tracks
• Locations such as Eli Creek, the Maheno shipwreck area, rainforest tracks, and Lake McKenzie can be physically demanding due to deep sand and uneven ground.

Vehicle Access

4WD High-clearance Vehicle Access

Our tours operate in high-clearance 4WD vehicles designed for off-road conditions on K’gari.

Vehicle features include:

• High step-up entry (approximately 1.2 metre ascent or descent)
• Grab handles for entry and exit
• Fixed forward-facing seating
• Seatbelt restraints

Ride Conditions

Travel may involve:

• Continuous vibration
• Sharp movement over ruts
• Sudden bumps
• Side-to-side movement on inland tracks
• Long travel periods without sealed roads

This may affect guests with:

• Back or neck injuries
• Chronic pain
• Pregnancy
• Reduced mobility
• Balance conditions
• Sensory sensitivities

Passengers should be comfortable:

• Climbing into the vehicle
• Managing movement while travelling on uneven terrain
• Riding on rough 4WD tracks with vibration and jolting

Guests who can transfer into the vehicle with minimal assistance may still be accommodated depending on individual requirements.

Terrain & Environmental Conditions

K’gari’s environment presents unique natural conditions that all guests should consider before travelling.

Eli Creek

Eli Creek features:

• Soft deep sand
• Uneven access points
• Slippery surfaces near water
• Limited hard pathways
• Steps and 150 metre boardwalk to bathroom facilities (Note that the flowing creek must be crossed to gain access to bathroom)

Maheno Shipwreck

SS Maheno includes:

• Soft beach sand
• Uneven walking surfaces
• Variable walking distances depending on tides
• No bathroom facilities

Rainforest Tracks

Rainforest sections may involve:

• Narrow uneven tracks
• Tree roots and bumps
• Vehicle swaying and vibration
• Slippery surfaces after rain
• No bathroom Pile Valley (Nature Tour)
• Bathroom access at Central Station (Adventure Tour)

Lake McKenzie

Lake McKenzie includes:

• Soft silica sand
• Sloped beach access
• Walking distances from parking areas approximately 200 metres
• Bright reflective conditions
• Bathroom access

Sensory & Neurological Accessibility

Visually Impaired Guests

Our tours are highly visual experiences focused on K’gari’s landscapes and scenery. While guides provide verbal commentary and descriptions throughout the tour, some aspects may be less suitable for guests who are blind or have low vision.

Deaf & Hearing-Impaired Guests

Our tours include verbal commentary and safety briefings via our PA system (public address system)

We can provide:

• Written tour information
• Visual demonstrations during stops
• Additional support where practical

For safety reasons, guests who are unable to hear verbal instructions should make the guide aware so alternative methods of delivery can be provided. Eg: hard copy of dingo safety strategies.

Sensory Sensitivities & Neurodivergent Guests

K’gari’s environment can involve:

• Engine and road noise
• Bright sunlight and heat
• Sand exposure
• Sudden vehicle movement
• Busy tourist areas

Guests with sensory sensitivities, autism spectrum characteristics, anxiety, or neurological processing differences are encouraged to contact us before booking so we can provide detailed information about the tour experience.

Dietary Requirements

We cater for a range of dietary requirements including:

• Vegetarian and Vegan
• Gluten free, dairy free and nut free snacks and lunch
• Other dietary requirements

Please advise us of all dietary requirements at the time of booking and in particular guests with severe allergies should contact us directly before travel to discuss food handling and safety requirements.
